"Hyenas in Petticoats" was a derogatory insult for the suffragettes, but it backfired because some of them embraced the nickname. Our founders love the idea of creating the same stir in the publishing and entertainment industries.

Salter Network Press is an imprint of Hyenas in Petticoats Press. Salter Network Press is named in honor of Susanna M. Salter. She served as mayor of Argonia, Kansas, becoming the first woman elected as mayor and one of the first women elected to any political office in the United States. She was nominated on the Prohibition Party ticket by several men as a joke intended to shame area suffragettes. She succeeded in getting elected, winning with two-thirds of the votes on April 4, 1887, just weeks after Kansas women gained the right to vote in city elections. In the spirit of Susanna Salter, we support and promote the empowerment of women, especially in the historically male-dominated industries of publishing, film, and television.
